PINSTRIPE WIZARDS

The history of pinstriping stretches back in one long, straight, hand-painted line all the way to horse-drawn carriages and further back in time to cave walls. What’s certain is this: you can’t talk about pinstriping without hearing the name Kenny Howard, best known as Von Dutch. Thought to be the granddaddy of the art, Von Dutch was an artist and avid biker who learned hand lettering at age 10 from his papa, a professional sign painter. He did the majority of his work in the 1940s and 1950s, but today the art is just as hot as it was back then. This time around, however, it has resurfaced in the mainstream, straddling both the hot rod and biker culture and the Jaguar and Mini Cooper set.

PITBULL

The other side of Miamy lurks right behind the sandy shores and sweaty nightclubs of South Beach. From the proud Cuban communities like Little Havana to the mean streets of Liberty City, the city has another side that isn’t all sunshine and martinis. Like his hometown, there’s another side to Pitbull. Somewhere behind the bling and club bangers, the Cuban-American MC wants to be more than a party-starter known for the hypnotic beats and infectious hooks of club anthems like “Culo” and “Toma.” And like any artist, the line between art and commerce has left him conflicted. “What I do is make hit records,” Pitbull says flatly. “As an independent ...

POLAR BEAR CLUB
CHASING HAMBURG [BRIDGE NINE]

Polar Bear Club’s debut album made best-of lists everywhere, but it takes until nearly the end of this follow-up for them to prove why. Not that Chasing Hamburg isn’t brilliant—it’s just that “One Hit Back,” a post-hardcore punch to haters everywhere, is so fist-pumping good that its shadow looms over the rest of the songs. “Living Saints” comes close as singer Jimmy Stadt swears, “All my friends are living saints” over guitars that leap from mellow to pit-stirring. Mostly, Polar Bear Club mix the passion and fury of Hot Water Music and Latterman with hooks and a spit-polish (with an occasional nod to Lifetime—see “Drifting Things”). And we swear to spend more time with the rest of the album once we take “One Hit Back” off Repeat.

PRIMAL URGE

Grime talks fast, but his work takes time; his website, grimemonster.com, informs visitors that the wait to get inked is currently a whopping three years. Opening the store just over a year ago (after, Grime says, he grew tired of the “speed freaks” and “shitty landlord” he was dealing with at the now-defunct Artwork Rebels), Grime and his staff of self-proclaimed “tattoo warriors” have carved out a niche for themselves in the Bay Area. And that’s not just because they have a reputation for producing super-high-quality work or because the owner is something of a tattoo rock star; the shop works because, as Grime says, “We’re really nice.” With no signage to advertise that they even exist, Primal Urge is the studio for the erudite collector looking for a warm, ...
