This is Part One of our two-part interview/photo shoot with Alt Porn superstar Joanna Angel. Once you’ve laughed your way through this interview and fallen head over heels for Joanna, click here to see more steamy photos from the raucous porn star barbecue she hosted.
If you want something done right, you’ve got to do it yourself. If the music on the radio puts you to sleep, then pick up a guitar and make your own racket. If you’ve got nowhere to go on a Friday night, then create a space, book some bands, host an artist or two and start a scene. Or, in the case of Joanna Angel, if you get that special tingle from tattooed dudes and charged chicks in leather, and your internet search results come up dry as a bone, you call a few friends, pull a few all nighters, and start an empire.
Actress, writer, producer, director and all around sexy nutcase Joanna Angel took what we all loved, the girl next door, dyed her hair, gauged her ears, and inked her up, and we’ve yet to see the high water mark (God, I hope that’s just a water mark). It’s hard to remember a time when there was a shortage of tattooed, punk rock, sneering sultry ladies strewn about the internet, but up until the early oughts, the most you could hope for was a tramp stamp and the occasional nipple ring. Joanna is largely credited not only for developing the Alt Porn community, but for keeping it exciting, relevant, and most importantly, fun.
So how did this all happen? What’s the no-pun-intended-at-all seed that was planted that turned this hardcore Jersey Girl into a hardcore Alt Porn Princess? For Joanna, the inspiration came early (seriously, these are unintentional). “I remember when I was ten years old,” Joanna waxes nostalgically, “That’s when I learned what MTV was. I watched hair metal music videos like it was nobody’s business. I would kind of masturbate. I wasn’t really finishing, but I was definitely doing something… I was looking at the girls. A couple of years later when those Aerosmith music videos came out, I didn’t even like Aerosmith at all, but when Alicia Silverstone and Liv Tyler were making out and being bad girls in every video, I was like ‘uhhhh that’s so hot.’ I was infatuated. It’s just an aesthetic that I’ve always been attracted to. I see a Victoria Secret Model and it doesn’t do anything for me, I don’t think that’s interesting, but show me a picture of Joan Jett, or Ruby Rose, any woman with an edge, it’s sexy. Men are the same way. It’s no secret, guys with tattoos are really hot.”
That’s it, it’s that simple, girls and guys with tattoos are hot, why not showcase them at their sexiest, in their rawest state? So, in 2002, Joanna did what any young, entrepreneur would, she found a hole, and filled it. Launching her website and production company Burningangel.com in 2002, She combined her love for the Rock and Roll aesthetic with the DIY notion that just because something doesn’t exist doesn’t mean you can’t make it exist, and as any late night Google will prove, nowhere is that more true than in the medium of porn. Since then Joanna has released hundreds of titles, earned countless awards, and showcased some of the hottest tattooed, pierced, spikey neon ladies on the planet, ultimately altering what people think of when they think of porn, which they do…often. “I hope I had something to do with it, the type of girl that’s popular now is just different. That 90’s blond bombshell look used to be the only thing, you’d look up ‘pornstar’ in the dictionary and that was the picture you’d see. Now a pornstar can look like anything, there’s room for all kinds of sexy in the spectrum of porn”.
If there is a spectrum of porn (please…please let there be a spectrum of porn) then Joanna has touched every hue on its color wheel. She has written sex advice columns, given lectures, and filmed cooking shows for her YouTube channel. She likes to talk about sex, talk during sex and people love asking her questions about sex. There’s something about her candid nature that allows people to let their guard down, even when she’s telling them to watch her fuck. “I pointed a friend of mine to a specific scene that I was in, and I said ‘Watch that scene, I’m not telling you to jerk off to me because you’re my friend but there’s some really cool stuff going on and you should try to mimic some of it”. It’s difficult to imagine anyone but Joanna Angel referring to a sex scene as “really cool stuff” while simultaneously reminding a friend not to masturbate to her, but she does. It’s part of the unrelenting relatable nature that allows her to field questions like, “’what do I do so I don’t poop while I’m having anal sex’…I laugh every time I have to answer that question. I give anal sex seminars from time to time, I giggle and squirm, I just can’t stand there in a room full of people and not laugh while talking about poop. I don’t ever think I’ll be mature enough t get over that.”
Joanna has the ability to talk about sex in the same way most people would discuss music, or fashion, or food. She’s passionate, obviously, and she has the ability to dissect sex and enjoys making people understand what’s important about it, what’s fun about it, and what you should take away from it. “We do a lot of positions in porn that you don’t have to do at home. We do them so the camera can see what’s going on. It’s supposed to put a fantasy inside of your head. Then you take that fantasy and you do whatever you want with it. Threesomes, orgies or DPs, stuff like that isn’t completely natural. Most people don’t instinctually know what to do, and I think porn can help. It gets your brain going. A couple once told me that they watched an orgy that I was in and then they invited a bunch of their friends over and had an orgy themselves. That’s really cool, they got inspired, they got horny and then they went out and they did something and made it their own.”
Despite the esteem that she’s earned, Joanna is still reluctant to call herself an “expert” on sex. Understandably so, there’s no universal rule, no proven combination, sex is a preference, and Joanna tries to express that above all else, practice makes perfect. “I’m not an expert” (see, we told you), “I have sex the way that you do. I try things out and if I don’t like them I don’t do them anymore. I have an open mind and I have sex with other open minded people, I’ve been fortunate enough to have sex with a lot of professionals who’ve been able to teach me things…so that’s cool. It’s important to have fun and be confident, follow your instincts. If your body is telling you ‘I want my boob to be grabbed, then take their hand and put it on your boob. Follow what your body’s telling you to do.”
The confidence at the root of Joanna’s ethos has brought her from the New Jersey punk scene to the forefront of a genre that she helped create. It has allowed her to make something instead of wait for it to exist, and it has brought her places that even she didn’t think she would wind up, like becoming an ordained minister and officiating a wedding. “To add to my bizarre resume of things, I was asked to marry Draven Star, she’s one of the Burning Angel girls. I asked her fiancé ‘Are you sure you want the woman in your girlfriend’s life that pays her to have sex with other men to marry you guys…are you really sure?’ And he’s like ‘there’s no one else I’d rather have do it,’ that’s all I needed to hear, I’m in.”
What’s the end game? What has all of this been building up to? Where does someone like Joanna Angel go once she’s reached the edge, when it seems no stones have been left unturned? Simple, back home to the East Coast, to screw in public, “I want to have sex in the middle of Times Square. I really hate Times Square so I’ll put that on my to do list. I want all the logos in the background too, I’m not blurring out any of them. I want that giant Cup O Noodles’ blessing.” The only downside we can see to shooting porn in Times Square would be acquiring the permits for the seven or eight sequels. Nonetheless, we wait with baited breathe for whatever Joanna throws our way next, whether she’s introducing the world to a new tattooed bombshell, shooting a hilarious porn parody, or just teaching us how to get better at fucking each other, Joanna gets our blood pumping, as she leaves us with one last word to the wise “I’m dirtier than your average man, most women are.”
