Artists: Jason “mazing” Myers
What year did you start tattooing: 2004
Do you have any special training: I had a two year apprenticeship by an old biker type dude named john. So my special training was getting yelled at scrubbing tubes making needles and washing cars . I never had any formal schooling in art really. I was infatuated with cartoons and comics as a kid and drew them religiously. I used to help my best friend cheat on his assignments for art class in high school doing them for him and teachers used to pay me to draw posters and stuff for them.
Tell us about the style of your work: I love doing color realism and new school. I super dig anything comic oriented and that's had a huge influence on my art and tattoos.
Conventions usually worked: I do a lot of the Body Art Expos; San Francisco, San Diego and Pomona. I also do Redding Ink, Tattoos and Blues, Rockabilly Riot
Where did you apprentice?: I did an apprenticeship under John Cameron and Rob Robinson originally at Hot Ink Tattoo for about a year and a half, then I went to Dv8 Tattoo in Vallejo CA and Rick Anders and Nathan Montessi helped get me to were I am today.
What tattoo artist do you most admire: That's a tuff one cuz theres so many. Guy Aitcheson, Nikko hurtado, Brandon Bond, Nick Baxter the list goes on.....
Before someone gets a tattoo what advice do you give them?: Don't buy into the fads!!! and stop Googling shit for your tattoos!!!! Put thought and heart into your tattoos don't just be another girl with birds fling off a feather!! haha
How did you get into tattooing: I've spent my whole life drawing since I was a child. It always gave me a place to escape to. I was always put down by teachers and some family members who always told me that my art would get me nowhere. So at seventeen I dropped outta school got my GED and joined the Army to be compliant with what everyone else wanted me to do. After i got out I was miserable i worked dead end jobs at a chicken plant and multiple restaurants. Finally one day i just said screw it!!! Im packing a back pack and going to california to do something with my art. Failure wasn't an option I was gonna do what i wanted to do with my life and that was draw. The biggest influence to do amazing tattoos that i have is to prove everyone wrong that i will do something with my art and i will be someone one day.
What inspires you to be an artist: Everything I see! my friends weird out cuz im that guy taking pictures of a dead flower by the dumpster!
What kind of tattoos do you look forward to doing: Anything comic or b-rate movie related!!
Is there a tattoo that you haven't done yet that you are dying to do: I want do an epic battle of all of Harrison Fords roles in movies! Blade Runner, Han, Indy, The fugitive all just getting down in one bad ass battle royal!
