D.C. Council Aims To Regulate Tattoo And Piercing Industry

WRITER Maya Phillips

The D.C Council gave its initial approval to legislation that would require tattoo artists and piercers to follow health and safety standards under the direction of the Department of Health. D.C. is one of the few jurisdictions in the country that has an unregulated tattoo and piercing industry.

Councilwoman Yvette Alexander says she introduced the new legislation out of concern about the spread of infectious diseases. She stated that even some industry insiders reached out to her asking for regulation. At a hearing last December, D.C. artists were split on their opinion of the legislation. Some stated the new legislation would only be costly and burdensome while others said only the illegitimate artists and piercers will be negatively affected.
