Graffiti Revolution

WRITER Maya Phillips

Despite the recent efforts of government authorities, residents of Cairo are making sure the 2011 revolution will not be forgotten. Cairo is being covered with graffiti depicting soldiers, politicians, and everyday Egyptians who affected and were affected by last year's revolution. Tahrir Square in particular serves as a spray painted memorial commemorating those who died in the name of freedom. The Egyptian government has been trying to paint over the graffiti and has even imprisoned some of the artists. Still, many of the artists won't be discouraged by the government's plans to destroy the murals. Groups of artists and activists have been continuing to repaint the revolutionary art, even as government officials repeatedly try to cover it up.
