Dead To Me

Many an artist claims that music has saved his or her life, but Dead to Me bassist and vocalist Chicken is living proof that it happens. After getting out of rehab for substance abuse in 2005, Chicken formed Dead to Me with two of his friends from the newly defunct band One Man Army. “When I got out of rehab I was really trying to stay out of trouble because I was a fucking drug addict, man,” he explains during his lunch break at a Bay Area warehouse. “So I started playing music with my friends every day after work. We never thought about getting signed or going on tour—we just wanted to have fun.”

Dead to Me’s unique brand of punk rock instantly caught on, and the past four years have seen the band play alongside acts such as NOFX and travel to exotic locales like Japan. Although the lineup has changed over the years, these days Chicken plays alongside drummer Ian Anderson and guitarist Nathan Grice.

Now Dead to Me is about to release their second full-length, African Elephants, which will please fans of The Clash and The Casualties alike. “I like all kinds of shit, so on this record there are some slow songs and some faster ones too—we’ve even got a reggae kind of song on there,” Chicken says. “I have no interest in putting out the same record five times.”
