Matthew Amey brings “clean lines, solid color, and pain” to tattoos. He can also decorate more than people, having recently won Uncommon Goods' Wall Art Challenge. “Skin is a very fickle medium, and it limits the ability to accurately represent certain colors and designs over time,” he says. Plus, paper doesn’t ask you to tattoo it on during a Fishbone concert (as a client of Amey’s did). But he is up for any challenge. In fact, his career was born of sibling rivalry. “My older brother could always draw better than me, so I started taking art classes. I stuck with it while he returned to his studies. He is now a rocket scientist—no joke.”
