Dying to look young!

The beauty industry is worth 265 billion dollars a year, and every day people are trying to come up with new ways to grab a piece of that luxurious pie. Well a few years ago Kim and Kourtney made a very unusual type of facial very popular and ever since then spas across the country have been offering this unique facial service.
We are talking about the “vampire facial”! Basically, this is what a vampire facelift is…or isn’t. According to KOMONEWS.com, which breaks it down like this, “Technically, it’s not a facelift at all. It’s a designer cosmetic procedure that combines injectable hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, with what many call a “natural’ fountain of youth” — components of your own blood.

“Vials of blood are placed in a machine called a centrifuge and spun at high speed. The centrifuge separates red blood cells from plasma — a golden yellow liquid known as PRP. PRP, platelet rich plasma, is the part of your blood that helps stop bleeding and heal wounds.

“PRP is FDA approved for use in orthopedic surgery, but more and more it’s being used for non-surgical procedures. Many people, including professional and weekend athletes, get PRP injections to help heal and repair tennis elbow, tendonitis, and arthritis.

And now, PRP is being used cosmetically to help fight the visible signs of aging. The rationale? Injectable fillers give initial volume. PRP stimulates cell growth for more youthful, longer lasting results.”

Sounds, scary, creepy and potentially dangerous, and many people would agree on all three. However, it is being practiced safely in most spas with customers praising the results. However, this week a spa in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has been shut down by health officials when at least one client of the spa reported developing an “unspecified infection”. This prompted the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDH) to step in and make the recommendation “all those who received treatments at the “VIP Spa” – including so-called “vampire facials” are being advised to get tested for HIV and hepatitis.”

“It is very important that anyone who received a vampire facial or other injection-related service at the VIP Spa in May or June of 2018 come to the Midtown Public Health Office for free and confidential lab testing and counselling,” stated Lynn Gallagher, the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDH) Cabinet Secretary.

Like with tattooing there are needles involved and the proper sterilization or use of disposable items is a must. Michael Landen, an NMDOH epidemiologist, said this is “concerning because if needles aren’t handled appropriately, you could potentially increase the risk of a blood-borne infection”.

Luly Ruiz, the owner of the spa insisted she only uses disposable needs for the facials. “I open them in front of my clients every time they come,” she said. “I want everybody to be sure, everybody to be happy and to know they don’t have anything.”

While her claims are being investigated, a look into the spa’s paperwork uncovered that VIP Spa did not actually have a valid license to perform the gruesome facials and because of an outdated scheduling system, they have no idea how who or how many people actually received a vampire facial.
