Born In Mexico
Kat Von D was born Katherine von Drachenberg on March 8th, 1982 in Montemorelos, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Her parents are of Argentinian, German Italian and Spanish descent. The family moved to the United States when Kat was six-years-old. She is a proud Mexican American and not very fond of President Trump.
The Daughter of Missionaries
As the daughter of Seventh-day Adventist missionaries Kat grew up in a very religious household.
“Christianity, with a few Jewish traits. We kept the Sabbath, went to church on Saturdays, followed the ten commandments, and didn’t eat any pork or fish without scales.”
Her father was a missionary and a doctor, however despite the father’s profession the family did not live a lavish lifestyle. “We didn’t have electricity or running water for a long time,” Kat wrote in PopSugar.
“And, in fact, one of my favorite photos from our family album is one of me taking a bath in a plastic bucket! Let’s put it this way, in this town, you were more likely to see a horse than you would a car.”
A Classically Trained Pianist
Kat may not look the part of a classical musician, but she has been playing classic piano since the age of six.
Her parents did not allow their children to watch TV, so Kat and her siblings practiced music daily as a form of recreation.
Kat still plays today and says she is partial to the works of Ludwig von Beethoven.
