Celtic tattoos are recognized for their key patterns, interlaced knotwork and spirals also found in a Celtic cross. Irish legend says that St. Patrick created the first Celtic cross. The circle he drew over a Latin cross was to incorporate a pagan moon goddess symbol. Many Irish Catholics believe the circle in the Celtic cross represents Christ’s halo or a symbol of God’s eternal love. Though the Celtic and Irish cross shape has been used by many ancient peoples long before Christianity’s inception. Its four arms have been interpreted in various ways including the directions of the compass, or to represent the mind, body, heart and soul of man.
