Sailor Jerry Presents in Austin

So you think you were at “the place to be” this SXSW 2011? Not unless you were drinking Perfect Storms and Sailor’s Creams, sweating it up to the Black Lips at Sailor Jerry Presents at the Shangri’la.

The anti-over-the-top, anti-sponsorship lounge (no signage bombardment, no door attitude; just good drinks and friends, ’cause that’s how Sailor Jerry does it) culminated its four days with a secret Black Lips show on Saturday, 3/19. The penultimate and by far the most personal performance of their hectic SXSW schedule, Black Lips and Sailor Jerry packed in 500 number of fans and industry alike, getting rowdy to old classics like “O! Katrina” and “Dirty Hands”, as well as new tunes from their forthcoming album out this June produced by Mark Ronson.

As if that wasn’t enough, Sailor Jerry furnished a vintage 1973 Airstream across the street so the bands could chill, conduct interviews, and meet up with legendary tattoo artist Oliver Peck. That’s right, the man who holds the world record for the most tattoos done in 24 hours and the current Vans Warped Tour artist was setting on-the-spot appointments for flash tattoos courtesy of Sailor Jerry.

Once the word got out on Twitter, Oliver Peck superfans and loads of bands who were performing at SXSW stopped by in hopes of a Sailor Jerry tattoo. Members of Datarock, The Vaccines, The Gum Creek Killers, Riverboat Gamblers, Lucero, Motion City Soundtrack, Paint it Black and many more walked away sporting Peck’s work – some of them having just been tattooed for the first time ever!
