travel/budapest Many of the world's historical treasures have been sanitized and Starbucksified until there's little personality left: Moscow's Red Square has tchotchke-hawking souvenir carts, the leaning tower of Pisa has more handrails than a nursing home, and the Great Pyramids have a freakin' laser light show. But somehow Hungary's magical capital city of Budapest has retained its ......
travel/singapore You wouldn't think a tattoo convention would be welcome in a strict city-state that has been criticized for its disregard of individual freedoms-it banned chewing gum for 12 years (1992-2004) and still imposes hefty fines for things like forgetting to flush a public toilet or spitting in public. But Singapore's government hasn't found a way to stop ......

drive/hatch-made-heaven Elsewhere in the world, hatchbacks are ubiquitous. "It's a lot of work, but it's also really rewarding; both aspects of my life have their challenges, but they also have their rewards." Amazon.com WidgetsHause knows a thing or two about paying his dues. He got his start as a roadie for New Jersey punk legends The Bouncing Souls and started The Loved Ones in ... ...
inked-people/nichole-east Nichole East's business card reads "Kid Robot, Toy Baroness." That says enough. As one of the first employees at quirky-cool adult toy company Kid Robot, she remembers when the team was so tiny that they were excited just to have business cards. "There were only maybe six or seven of us total," she recalls. "We had so many tasks ......
inked-people/heather-gabel When Heather Gabel created Alkaline Trio's iconic skull and heart logo through a happy accident with a photocopier, she had no idea the countless tattoos it would inspire. "I was at Kinko's making a flyer and was like, 'I'm just going to throw this in here,'" she remembers. "I was 19 and pretty heavily into skulls at ......
inked-people/new-found-glory Believe it: The Bible is better fodder for tattoo inspiration than it might seem. In fact, New Found Glory guitarist Chad Gilbert probably wouldn't have gotten his first tattoo if it weren't for the good book. "When I was really little, my mom gave me this Bible. On the spine, there was a shield with a cross in ......
inked-people/tara-dakides Long before Tara Dakides was an X Games champ and leading lady of snowboarding, she was another 18-year-old having doubts about her next tattoo. "He had a twitchy eye," Dakides remembers of the tattooer who took a turntable in payment for a tattoo. "I should've known from that point that he probably wouldn't have done good work." She ......
inked-people/nigel-sylvester Ask pro BMX freestyle rider Nigel Sylvester which hurts more-getting a chest piece shaded or taking a header into the ground after missing a toothpick grind-and he'll say neither: It's all about mind over matter. "Riding bikes is physical-you're gonna fall down and get hurt," says Sylvester. "Same with tattoos. Yeah, some of 'em hurt, but I ......
inked-people/erik-ellington Pro skateboarder Erik Ellington’s first-ever tattoo was nearly a casualty of his INKED photo shoot. “I went bombing down a hill and slammed,” the 31-year-old skater recounts. “I rolled down the hill like a rag doll, scraping up my whole right side.” The fall slashed up the word “Balance” on his upper arm—the name of the skate company ......
inked-people/bronx The Bronx have a new album out—but you might not realize it. That’s because the Los Angeles band’s third album, like the two that came before it, is titled simply The Bronx. It’s part of the band’s plan to keep things simple—a plan that also includes recording at the group’s own studio and ......
inked-people/shirly-brener "I've gotten to play a lot of drug addicts and hookers this year," muses actress Shirly Brener. The Bardot-esque blonde, who possesses a paradoxical mix of girl-next-door charm and femme fatale-worthy dark sensuality, revels in her distinctiveness. She's as comfortable portraying the bubbly love interest in a romantic comedy as a depraved addict in an indie flick. "Once ......
inked-people/carolyn-spence Hollywood hideaway Chateau Marmont, with its cadre of celebutantes, fringed lanterns, and butterfly-festooned decor, has always been known more for its trysts and tragedies than its food. But with the installation of executive chef Carolyn Spence, former chef de cuisine at New York City's Spotted Pig, both Chateau and Bar Marmont are finally building some culinary cred. “It's ......
inked-people/laura-santana Laura Satana was born badass. Growing up in the Paris suburbs (think projects, not picket fences) the 31-year-old picked up her first tattoo machine at 15. The setup, a homemade scratcher piece, was a gift from gypsies she often watched tattoo her young friends, sometimes using Satana's own drawings. With machine in hand, the teenage tattooist opened up shop ......
inked-people/missy-suicide The explosion of tattooed, pierced, and otherwise modified models can be traced back to one Portland, Oregon, woman who was fed up with "siliconeenhanced Barbie dolls." Using her prior experience on the Web and the camera skills she learned in art school, Selena Moody (now known as Missy Suicide) snapped photos of her friends in pinup-style poses and worked with ......
inked-people/bleeding-through Two years had passed since Brandan Schieppati got his last tattoo-a silhouette on his side of Rocky Balboa—and Bleeding through's acerbic singer didn't have any immediate plans to get more ink. then, in early June, a phone call with his manager about the band's upcoming European tour left him rankled. At the time, Bleeding through was ......
inked-people/topout Born in the spit and blood of the mixed-marital-arts world, Tapout clothing is the uniform for guys who are (or at least want to look) tough. inked-people/jk5 Joseph Ari Aloi has been known in the tattooing world for 14 years as JK5, although few stop to ask what's behind the initials, instead focusing on his trippy custom work that rocks the collars, hands, and bellies of Williamsburg, Brooklyn— home to Saved Tattoo, where he's been tattooing for the past two years. When an artist marries ......
inked-people/jim-koch Long before he worked with everyone from Mötley Crüe to Marilyn Manson and designed skate decks and high-end toys, graphic designer Jim Koch (pronounced cook) worked with his hands in another way—as a lumberjack. "I was buckin' and haulin' logs and I said, Fuck that! I want to draw," he remembers of his teen logging years. Koch traded in ......
inked-people/yung-berg Fifteen is a tough age to get anything right, let alone to handle the lifestyle and responsibilities associated with landing a major record deal. Christian "Yung Berg" Ward signed his first deal as a teenager and felt all was cool with his adolescent fame and fortune, though his parents didn't quite share the sentiment. "I was wild'n out ......
inked-people/rachel-larratt Rachel Larratt, also known as Chica Loca, takes a hair-pin turn at 129 miles per hour in her 2006 Lotus Elise and finds that the preceding evening's rain has washed away a large chunk of the stretch of Mexican roadway where she's been racing. She pilots around it and continues on, just a streak of gunmetal in Mexico ......
inked-people/civet Most artists are inspired by art they love, but it was a particularly bad backyard show by a Los Angeles punk group that spurred singer Liza Graves to form a band. "I went home and started my own band because I was so disappointed," Graves remembers. She teamed with her sister, guitarist Suzi Homewrecker, bassist Jacqui Valentine, and drummer Danni ......
inked-people/horitaka Ten years ago, when tattooer Horitaka traveled to Japan and sought out tattoo master Horiyoshi II with hopes of starting a back piece, he had no idea what he was truly beginning. inked-people/h2o Reading off the tattoos from H20 front man Toby Morse’s skin is a lot like flipping through the artists on his iPod. “I probably have like 30 different band tattoos, man,” he says from his California home, scouring his legs for examples. “I’ve got 7 Seconds, Murphy’s Law, Madball, Kill Your Idols, Dag Nasty, Minor Threat. inked-people/jules-kim Jewelry designer Jules Kim doesn’t like to be ripped off, so the fact that her studio is in the heart of New York City’s Chinatown, the home of knockoffs, is a bit ironic. Not long after launching her high-end jewelry line Bijules in 2004 and seeing her work worn by everyone Gwen Stefani to Rihanna, Kim started a ......
inked-people/scott-campbell Tattooers’ names are tossed around in casual conversation all the time. But unless they’re starring in a popular TV series or have a multimillion-dollar clothing line named after them, most artists aren’t exactly recognizable to millions. Except maybe Scott Campbell. Whether you know his name or not, chances are you’ve seen his work, and not just the ......
inked-people/vinnie-jones VINNIE JONES IS A PSYCHO. It’s the nickname he earned himself as a pro soccer player, and if you had to pick just one word to describe the roles he’s pursued in his second career as a Hollywood bad-ass, “psycho” would fit the bill quite snugly. The 43-year-old British expat first came to notoriety in the ’80s. Though ......
inked-people/built-last New York City hardcore could never have been born anywhere else. The music was built in the city, for the city. It came stripped-down, muscled-up, and overloaded with all of the frantic energy and violence of the streets. It was designed to intimidate. The musicians were homeless, AWOL, and just plain crazy street kids who felt fed up with the ......
inked-people/dr-dave The Lower East Side was once the exclusive domain of New York City’s poorest immigrants and most brazen drug dealers. Over the years, the neighborhood has been co-opted by million dollar condos, but Dr. Dave Ores (or Dr. Dave as locals have known him for 13 years), isn’t beating the anti-gentrification drum. Instead, in his street-front medical office ......
inked-people/keril Five years ago, just before Estonian pop singer Kerli turned 16, she asked her conservative mother to let her get a tattoo of a “little Chinese hieroglyph” on the back of her neck for a birthday present and reward for her academic prowess. “She said, “No fucking way’” Kerli remembers. Instead, her mom challenged er to find every book in ......
inked-people/twinkie-chan There’s something different about San Francisco scarf designer Twinkie Chan. Several things actually. First, there’s the way she talks. Twinkie doesn’t say things like “Look at that” and “My parents said.” Instead, she says, “Take a gander” and “The parental response was.” The speech pattern is most likely the result of her San Francisco day job. She ......

inked-people/johnny-iuzzini The desserts at New York City’s Jean Georges are some of the most sought-after sweets in the world. inked-people/margaret-cho Nothing about Margaret Cho made it look like she had a chance in hell in Hollywood. Burns started her ......

inked-people/eddie-steeples Actor Eddie Steeples’ tattoos tell his life story— and as far as we can tell, it’s going to be a comedy. Writers’ strike or not, a hit comedy on NBC is doing Eddie Steeples pretty well. Or so it would seem for the My Name Is Earl star, who is nearly impossible to track down. When I finally get ......
inked-people/rashad-mccants Rashad McCants played possessed. In high school, he ripped through the competition, earning state MVP honors in New Hampshire while taking his team to the state championship. College was no different. inked-people/sandy-poirier It’s freezing in Boston, but Sandy Poirier pays the cold weather no mind—he’s sporting his typical uniform. “If I die, I want to be buried in a rock and roll T-shirt, tight jeans, Chrome Hearts jewelry, and sneakas,” he says, with a voice that sounds like a scratched-up recording of John F. Kennedy. At first glance ......

inked-people/cast-la-ink The Learning Channel's reality show L.A. Ink is a phenomenon. It's come on the scene and pummeled the ratings of every tattoo television show that came before, and its star, Kat Von D, is the hottest thing in heels right now. inked-people/tara-mcpherson Sitting down with artist Tara McPherson you’re likely to get a lesson in physics these days: “When you take a super bright object, like a quasar, and place it in front of a massive object, it creates the illusion of four identical objects surrounding the original. That’s called Einstein’s Cross gravitational lens.” To hear this pouring so ......
inked-people/siri-garber Siri Garber, founder of Platform Public Relations in Los Angeles, has a groovy voice—a raspy, powerful one that probably makes some of her male clients think about pleasure, rather than business, when she picks up the phone. inked-people/dillinger-escape-plan Some say the best writing descends from despair, longing, elation, love; the same old drill. But, as Liam Wilson, bassist of Dillinger Escape Plan, will tell you, the only reason to write an album is out of revenge—sweet, sweet revenge. “If someone were to show me a crystal ball years ago and say we would make our best album ......
inked-people/nikki-sixx More than six years sober, former Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx has long emerged from rock-star rock bottom. Still working the over-processed, jet-black hair, complete with black-on-black threads and requisite metal rocker accoutrement, he looks young and refreshed, unlike most of his over-50-and haggard contemporaries. He’s in control. In fact, his most recent tattoo barks directions to the dude ......

inked-people/eve-salvail “Getting the name of a loved one tattooed on you jinxes the relationship,” says Eve Salvail. She should know. But she has had some luck as ......
