Body modification fanatic, Paulina Casillas Landeros, underwent the painful surgery to remove her belly button, to “dehumanize herself in a symbolic way”
23-year-old HR intern and tourism student said she wanted to give the body part to her boyfriend, Daniel Ramirez, as a present, symbolizing the “ultimate token of love.”
Landeros, from Jalisco, Mexico, has underwent other numerous body modification surgeries such as a “back corset,” which involves piercings on either side of the spine, as well as a split tongue.
Landeros said she wanted to do something controversial. She decided to remove her belly button because it is “what makes us human.”
She sent the belly button with a note that read, “I love you.”
But she now regrets it.
She ultimately regrets her decision, describing it as "reckless" and "impulsive."
"Body modifications fascinated me, there is something very transcending about them,” Landeros said.
Landeros said she had a history of problems with her family, and said she was not close with them at the time.
"I was very angry, I wanted to cut all unions from everything and everyone,” she said.
While she had the operation done by a professional, she said he “gave me very bad advice on how to take care of the trauma, so it got infected.”
With the infection, Landeros said she was suffering.
"I spent days in bed as if I were quarantined, I couldn’t stretch, push, stand up or laugh,” she said.
While the area has gradually healed, it will never be “100 percent” or entirely close.
"I was very much in love with my then boyfriend, he supported me through many difficult times, and he is one of the most influential people in my life,” Landeros said.
"It was something I did in the spur of the moment, we were young and stupid but that’s the way I felt.”
Landeros said Ramirez has kept the belly button and will “keep it forever because he knows the meaning behind it.”
While broken up, the two are “good friends” and will “always love each other.”
Landeros says her relationship with her family has since improved from what it was.
"I do regret it when I put myself in my mum’s position, it must have been devastating for her, she was so sad," she said.
Landeros said if she could go back in time she wouldn’t do it again. “It was impulsive, reckless and I hurt a lot of people.
"Even though I did it for the wrong reasons, it has now taught me I should think things through before acting,” she said. “and it’s a nice reminder that characterizes me."
