For years filigree was used primarily in architecture or jewelry. Usually made of gold or silver wires the designs were quite popular in the 16th to 19th centuries. Now it is becoming popular once again, only this time the medium is tattooing. Adding a little filigree to a design gives it an extra flourish, but tattoos made primarily of filigree are also quite beautiful on their own.
