In the early 19th century people began to take small denomination coins, often nickels, and carve their own designs into them. The large face on the nickel combined with the soft silver that the coins were made out of made them a perfect medium to deface. An artist by the name of Mr. The has taken the art of the hobo nickel into the 21st century with his intricate carvings. Many of them feature characters from popular films along with the usual hobo nickel standards. Enjoy this gallery of some of our favorite hobo nickels and check out more of Mr. The’s work here.
