Over the years, doctors and scientists have really stepped up their game when it comes to engineering new body parts. Before, if you lost a physical part of yourself, you needed to either go without or rely on a transplant/mechanical substitution. However, surgeons at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas were able to do something truly incredible for a woman who lost her ear in a car crash. Army Private Shamika Burrage is the first army vet to receive an ear transplant created from her own tissue. In a record breaking surgery, doctors harvested cartilage from her ribcage, carved a new ear, and placed it under her forearm to grow.
