While there are plenty of reasons why men watch porn, for instance boredom, checking out new positions and viewing a variety of women, could there also be a biological component. Well, as it turns out, psychologist and sex therapist Russell Stambaugh PhD believes that the answer lies in evolution. Take a look at his theory as to why men watch pornography in the gallery below and let us know your thoughts on the science of pornography in the comments section on Facebook.

In an interview with WebMD, Stambaugh was asked from a scientific standpoint why men like watching pornography. He argued that the male consumption of porn could be traced back to evolutionary strategy, noting that "men's brains are hard-wired for easy arousal." He goes on to explain that the mirror neurons, which are brain cells that fire when an action is observed, play a key role in male arousal and that pornography helps make men ready for sex when the opportunity presents itself.

This comparison between male and female brains has been argued for decades, leading to the phrase "men are visual creature." However, there is scientific evidence to back up the fact that men are much more in tune with their visual sense, whereas women approach the five senses holistically. This means that it is more likely for a woman to get off during foreplay as opposed to just pornography alone. It also points to why the Fifty Shades of Grey novel series was such an incredible hit among female readers world wide, whereas men would likely rather see sex than read about it.

When discussing this topic, it's also important to consider the sociological factors that impact porn consumption between men and women. Because the pornography demographic is predominately male dominated, the production is often catered toward a male audience. In a 2007 study conducted by Heather A. Rupp, Ph.D. and Kim Wallen, Ph.D., these experts were able to examine the ways that male-made and female-made pornography affected both genders. They found that "Women who viewed clips from erotic films made by women or men reported higher levels of sexual arousal to the woman-made films." They argued that this is largely because these films included a significantly greater amount of foreplay and were less associated with negative emotions such as shame, aversion or disgust.

However, these statistics don't mean that women hate pornography—because there are millions of women who love watching it. But instead it argues that the as a whole, women are less visually stimulated by the mainstream porn industry than men are. And you know what that means? Maybe the porn industry should start catering more to what turns on women and we might begin seeing a larger demographic of chicks getting it on to pornography.
