The mile-high club refers to people who have engaged in sexual intercourse while on an airplane. The first reference to this idea came way back in 1785 by way of a London Gentleman's betting book. In that book, there was an entry that read "Ld. Cholmondeley has given two guineas to Ld. Derby, to receive 500 Gs whenever his lordship has sex with a woman in a balloon one thousand yards from the Earth." This interaction of course refers to sex in a hot air balloon, however, it still qualifies as the first ever entry into the mile-high club. The first known and official mile-high club member was a pilot and engineer named Lawrence Sperry along with socialite Dorothy Rice Sims. The pair engaged in sexual intercourse on a flight in 1916 to New York City. This flight resulted in an aviation accident, which the American Transport Authority believed occurred because of their sexual intercourse.

Sperry was quoted saying, "Why, Mrs Peirce and I didn’t have what you might dignify by calling a real accident. It was only a trivial mishap. We decided to land on the water and came down perfectly from a height of 600 feet and would have made a perfect landing had not the hull of our machine struck one of the stakes that dot the water, which staved a hole in it."

According to a 2010 study, it is believed that 9% of Americans have had sexual intercourse in an airplane seat. The study then goes on to suggest that 17% have had sex in an airplane bathroom, with 5% of respondents reporting that they had sex with a stranger and 3% having sex with a member of the flight crew.

Many celebrities and public figures have admitted to being part of the mile-high club, including Richard Branson, Chris Brown, Miranda Kerr, Chrissy Teigen, Johnny Depp and Kris Jenner. However, the honorary mile-high club members that you're about to meet may have blown every single one of those famous folks out of the water.
