Before Kim Kardashian, there was Betty Brosmer

While Kim Kardashian may be recognized for bringing an exaggerated hourglass silhouette to the forefront of popular culture, long before her reign as a social media icon, there was a pin-up model known as Betty Brosmer. Brosmer was one of the most celebrated pin-up models of the 1950s, known for her stunning blonde locks and seemingly impossible waist that measured just 18 inches around.

During Brosmer's career as a model, she was featured in almost every men's magazine under the sun, with the exception of Playboy. Although she was approached to pose in the iconic publication, Brosmer turned down the offer because she refused to pose in the nude. However, keeping her clothes on didn't keep her from becoming one of the most successful models at the time. She went on to cover countless romance novels, win dozens of beauty pageants, and even modeled for Christian Dior.

A contract with pin-up photographer Keith Barnard, who'd previously worked with legends such as Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield, is truly what made Brosmer an international sensation—leading her to become the top selling pin-up of Barnard's career and the highest earning model in the United States at the time.

And while Brosmer's career as a pin-up model only lasting through the 1950s, this was far from the last we'd see of the blonde bombshell. In 1961, Brosmer married bodybuilder Joe Weider, who went on to create the International Federation of Bodybuilders, as well as, the Mr. Olypmia bodybuilding contest. Weider later became a magazine publisher and introduced the world to magazines such as Muscle & Fitness, Men's Health, and Shape. Brosmer was a contributor for Weider's magazines for over three decades and was an associate editor for Shape Magazine.

In 2018, Brosmer was portrayed by Julianne Hough in a dramatization of her husband's life titled Bigger, which showed the Weider family discovering bodybuilder turned actor turned politician, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

While Brosmer's husband passed away in 2013 at the age of 93, Brosmer herself is alive and well at 83-year-old. What do you think of the incredible life of Betty Brosmer? Had you seen her stunning photographs before? Let us know your thoughts on Brosmer and this story in the comments section.
