Celebrities are just like us, they make mistakes. However, some of those mistakes happen to be in tattoos and unlike the general public, they can't hide from a bad tattoo. Over the years, many top stars have gotten misspelled, mistranslated, and misplaced designs, here are the best of the worst.
In 2010, Rihanna got an elegant neck tattoo by NYC artist Bang Bang. However, fans were quick to point out that the script was mistranslated. Instead of saying rebellious flower, it reads "rebel flower." If Rihanna wanted it to say rebellious flower correctly in French, the noun would need to be placed before the adjective.
Britney Spears is another celebrity who has an unfortunate mistranslated tattoo. Spears got Chinese kanji tattooed on her hip, however, instead of reading "mysterious" it instead translated to "strange."
Adam Levine may have some of the best ink in Hollywood, but many have criticized the placement of his "Mom" tattoo. This tattoo was placed upside down, so when Levine's arm is down it instead reads "wow."
Like Levine, Lovato made the mistake of having her wrist tattoos placed upside down. Traditionally, script and other designs face away from the wearer but Lovato has hers turned toward herself.
Perhaps the freshest example of a celebrity tattoo mistake, Ariana Grande faced off against the wolves after posting a photo of a mistranslated palm tattoo. Grande intended her tattoo to say "7 rings" in Japanese, however, it instead translated to BBQ grill. Grande went back and attempted to fix the design with her artist, but her efforts only made things worse.
Lady Gaga surprised her fans by getting two brand new tattoos prior to the 2019 Academy Awards, one a large rose on her back and another a music sheet on her arm. But, after posting the photo of her music sheet, Gaga realized that she'd forgotten a staff line and quickly had the design altered by her artist. Luckily, this mistake was easily fixed but she was still criticized by the media for posting the mistake online.
English soccer player David Beckham made a fatal mistake when getting a tattoo for his wife Victoria by inking her name in Sanskrit. Although the design is aesthetically pleasing, instead of reading "Victoria," the script instead translated to "Vihctoria."
Academy Award-winning actress may be a talented performer, however, a scientist she is not. Back in 2015, Lawrence got H20 tattooed on her hand as a reminder to stay hydrated. However, the 2 was misplaced in the design—it's meant to be lower rather than higher in the correct chemical element abbreviation.
In 2009, actress Hayden Panettiere got the words "live without regrets" tattooed on her side. The phrase was however mistranslated in Italian—making it an extremely ironic choice. In 2013, Panettiere was spotted in the process of removing the design while swimming on a beach in Florida.
In July of 2012, Miley Cyrus got a line from Theodore Roosevelt's 1910 "Citizenship in a Republic" inked on the inside of her arm. Three months later, her now husband Liam Hemsworth got the line directly preceding Cyrus's inked in the same spot. However, Hemsworth forgot the second 'he' in the tattoo, causing it to read "if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly."
