You seldom hear me say, "Aw, what a cute bug," but when it comes to ladybugs I've got a soft spot for them. Ladybugs are also known as coccinellidae and belong to the beetle family. In North America, we call them ladybugs, however in other parts of the world they go by very different names. For example, they're called ladybirds in Great Britain and others may refer to them as lady beetles.

There are a staggering 5,000 different species of ladybugs found throughout the world. The most common species is the coccinella septempunctata, or the seven-spotted ladybug. These are very prevalent throughout Europe and North America, being the state insect of Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Ohio and Tennessee. Although ladybugs are most frequently red, they do come in other colors such as yellow, orange, black, brown and gray. The rarest color ladybugs are tan, with only two specimens ever captured.

Over the years, many ladybugs have appeared in television and film. Some of our favorite examples include Francis of 1998's "A Bug's Life" and the ladybug voiced by Nick Kroll in Netflix's "Big Mouth." There have also been plenty of fantastic ladybug tattoos over the years.
