Since first appearing on HBO's Girls in 2012, Lena Dunham has racked up an impressive collection of tattoos and she's not afraid to show them off on social media. And while many of Dunham's tattoos are ornamental, her latest piece has an incredibly sentimental significance.

On April 2nd, 2019 Dunham shared her newest tattoo on social media. The tattoo covers the back of her neck and is the word 'Sick' written in cursive script with rope detailing. The tattoo was done at Haven Studio in Brooklyn, a private studio described as "Body Positive safe space for Women, POC & LGBTQIA."

In sharing the photo, Dunham included an explanation of her new tattoo, writing "sometimes the thing you’re most scared of being called is the best thing you can call yourself." Many believe that this references her ongoing battle with endometriosis. In February of 2018, Dunham opened up about her struggle with the condition in an essay for Vogue, revealing that she'd had a hysterectomy. So far, Dunham has had nine surgeries to deal with her endometriosis and is unable to have children in the future. Dunham is not the first celebrity to open up about their struggles with endometriosis. Padma Lakshmi, Susan Sarandon, Whoopi Goldberg, Jillian Michaels, Cyndi Lauper, Halsey, and Bethany Frankel have all been diagnosed with the condition.
