On February 26th of 2014, Live Science published a report about a 4-month-old child from Maryland who had surgery to remove a rare brain tumor. However, upon examining the tumor, the doctors discovered something incredible. Despite the child not having a single tooth in his mouth, the tumor contained several fully-formed teeth.
The child had a Craniopharyngioma, a non-cancerous tumor which forms at the base of the brain near the pituitary gland. Researchers believe that these tumors form from the same cells that are involved with making teeth, however, it's unheard of to have teeth in this type of tumor.
The child recovered quickly after receiving surgery, however, because the tumor intercepted hormone product in his brain, he will need to receive thyroid and adrenal hormone treatment for the rest of his life. His tumor was later sent out to pathologists, who've investigated the unusual medical specimen.
