Is Jack Sparrow in Trouble Again?
Apparently, this hasn’t been the greatest past four years for Johnny Depp. Sure, he’s been in the headlines a lot, but it’s been mostly due to rumors of a deadly illness or financial woes. “The last three or four years has felt like a perverse situation that was inflicted on me. It hurts,” he told British GQ.
Depp went on to tell GQ, that he is hell-bent on rehabilitating his reputation and his career. First thing he wants to do is set the record straight by blasting the validity of his ex-wife Amber Heard’s allegations of physical abuse.
Depp has also employed the professional services of the P.R. firm Hawthorn, a company that handles crisis management for the rich and famous. (One of their partner companies in the U.S. has been working on the ongoing sale of the Weinstein Company.)
In the GQ feature Depp expressed his disappointment with the Rolling Stone trashed the article, saying he trusted the magazine to treat him fairly but felt he had been set up.
“I was shafted. The guy [journalist Stephen Rodrick] walked in with absolutely one intention. And I could see it and I thought maybe I could help him understand, you know?” he said. “I trusted Jann Wenner [co-founder and publisher of Rolling Stone], as I knew him through Hunter [S. Thompson, the late writer and a mentor of Depp]. I trusted what the magazine stood for, or what it used to stand for. I wanted Jann to see if he could write, to see if a piece could be written . . . to put things in perspective. That’s all, just to put things in perspective.”
The article also mentions Depp’s tattoo “blunders. Starting with his much discussed “Wino Forever” on the upper right biceps. It originally read Winona Forever”, which Depp got inked when he was dating Winona Ryder — he met her while they were both working on Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands in 1990. A more recent tattoo read “Slim” in Old English across his fingers. Slim was the name Depp used to call his ex-wife Amber Heard. After the divorce he had it amended to “Scum” and more recently “Scam”.
Let’s hope the future is brighter for our friend Johnny and with a major release this fall, playing the title role in the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. We wish you all the luck in the world Johnny boy!
