While men have dominated the tattoo industry for decades, their reign is coming to an end. According to Statista, in 2008 men with one or more tattoos outnumbered women with 15% versus 13% of the United States population. However, by 2015, women gained the upper hand with 31% versus 27%. There are a variety of factors that contribute to the increase of women getting tattooed, however, the most significant occurred because of social media. Social media allowed tattooing to spread to the masses and for the first time, many women began to see themselves as people who could have tattoos. In 2018, women of all ages, races, and education levels have tattoos—whether it be a tiny word on their ribs or a full body suit of ink.
