The tattoo in question sparked controversy when it was posted on Facebook by someone present at the protests by the name of Evan Parish Matthew. The tattoo is of an eagle with its wings spread sort of like the infamous design seen on the Nazi parteiadler emblem, and, right under the suspicious bird, the word "Fatherland" is inked in Gothic-style lettering.
Matthew's post reached over 8,000 shares, resulting in countless of social media posts and disapproving comments directed also at the city's police department, who then launched the investigation. The tattoo even caught the ire of the city's mayor, Jim Kenney, who said that the tattoo worn by Officer Lichterman was "disturbing," adding, "In this environment — in which open, honest dialogue between citizens and police is paramount — we need to be building trust, not offering messages or displaying images that destroy trust."
