From Harmless to Harmful

If you hear the term “rose budding” you’d probably imagine a harmless fight with roses, not a porn category that involves a collapsed anus, also known as “rectal prolapse” in the medical field. However, in porn, it received the term “rose budding” because the prolapsed rectum looks like a rosebud, as simple as that.

Somewhere down the rabbit hole in porn, "harmless" anal sex turned into an unhealthy and somewhat disturbing fascination, that will make you view roses - especially rosebuds - differently.

Although it doesn’t have the innocence and beauty of a rose per say, rose budding is in high demand in the industry.Sheena Shaw the proclaimed queen of anal sex, especially rose budding, told VICE how huge this fetish is, but how underpaid the porn stars, who perform this risky sexual entertainment, are.

Rectal prolapse can happen when the rectum is stretched out and the wall collapse, due to too much anal sex. Yet again there’s never too much sex, is there?

Joking aside, a rectal prolapse can be somewhat dangerous but definitely uncomfortable and painful. It includes anal leakage, and bowel problems, which means to take breaks while shooting, or the “rose budding” quickly turns into scat porn.

Pornstars who engage in this risky performance oftentimes train themselves to have a prolapsed rectum. Such as leaving a sex toy in overnight, or having a lot of anal sex, according to Shaw.

What most people don’t know, however, is that if something goes wrong, which does happen a lot, there is no workers comp. According to Shaw in her interview with VICE, pornstars sign a waiver before they shoot the scenes.

The question that remains though is what is going on in the porn industry? Is going the extreme the "new fetish?" Is risking your health really what turns people on? Or is it the complete control over someone and the vulnerability when that someone is the bottom?According to Mike South an ex-porn director, and blogger going the extreme turns away porn's original fan base, he said in his interview with VICE.

EXTREME TO OBSCENE

"At first it was relatively benign – gangbangs, anal, that kind of thing," he told VICE. "Then it was dressing girls up like preteens and picking them up on swing sets in schoolyards, forced oral until they threw up, forced anal... The more uncomfortable the girl looked, the more the industry would give it awards.”
